Implementation of Smart Tower Monitoring System at 50 Sites

PT Mora Jaya Persada launched the implementation of a Smart Tower Monitoring System (STMS) based on Internet of Things (IoT) technology across 50 Telkomsel tower sites spread throughout South Sumatra. This system enables real-time monitoring of tower structural conditions, environmental parameters, and telecommunications equipment status through a digital dashboard.

Sensor Technology and Parameters

The STMS, developed in collaboration with local technology partners, utilizes sensors installed on tower structures to measure various critical parameters, including: tower tilt, vibration, wind speed and direction, temperature and humidity, and guy wire tension.

Rizky Hidayat, S.T., Engineering Manager, explained that this system represents a digital transformation step in tower infrastructure management. "Previously, tower condition checks were performed manually through periodic site visits. With STMS, we can detect anomalies early and take preventive action before more serious problems occur," he elaborated.

IoT System Architecture

Each tower is equipped with 6-8 sensors connected to an IoT gateway using LoRaWAN connectivity. Data from the sensors is transmitted periodically to a cloud server and displayed on a dashboard accessible via web browser or mobile application. The system also features automatic alerts that send notifications to the maintenance team when certain parameters exceed established thresholds.

One successful early detection case involved an increase in tilt on a tower in Ogan Ilir Regency, which was detected by the sensors before it was visually apparent. The team promptly conducted an investigation and discovered soil subsidence around the foundation caused by erosion. Preventive repairs were carried out immediately, averting potentially greater damage.

Results and Expansion Plans

The pilot project at the first 50 sites demonstrated positive results, with a 60% reduction in maintenance response time and a 40% decrease in routine inspection costs. Based on these results, PT Mora Jaya Persada plans to expand STMS implementation across all 200+ sites under its management by 2025.

This project also serves as added value in PT Mora Jaya Persada's proposals to clients, demonstrating that the company is not only capable of building towers but also managing them intelligently using the latest technology.
